Trey Wingo talked about Purple Drank. everytime to word Drank came out of his mouth i nearly died from laughter. the best thing about the mainstream media discovering things like Lean is that they then get to explain it to the regular viewer (aka white folks not aware of shit). there little 5 minute piece on the history of Purple Drank was seriously some of the best unintentional comedy ive seen in a long time. good job ESPN.
So is it just me or do you ever get the feeling that Josh McDaniels is secretly involving himself in a drawnout revenge plot against the Denver Broncos? Like maybe he's secretly a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan who never got over getting beaten by those Elway teams back in the 80s (like most Browns fans haven't...that was your best team ever) and so McDaniels worked hard and became a hotshot offensive coordinator so he'd one day be able become Denver's headcoach and then slowly but surely would trade away their two best players in Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshal and then shockingly draft Tim "I love jesus a lot but can't really throw a football properly" Tebow to sink the franchise into the sort of misery that only the Browns and Lions can understand. Maybe I'm wrong...but it's my theory. Call me nuts but It honestly makes way more sense than what is going on.
For the first time in years I have paid almost zero attention to the offseason and I have a general idea of who the top prospects are but I am truly clueless as to who my Falcons are thinking about drafting next week. All I really know is that the Dirty Birds need to get someone to sack the QB and so I am guessing DE is gonna be a top need. Also linebacker is pretty thin and so with that in mind I can only assume either an LB or DE will come off the board first. Some other holes I hope they address would be finding a suitable backup for Michael Turner. I love Norwood's big play capability but I just don't think he's shown the ability to be an every down back if Turner should go down with a major injury. So if Ben Tate is sitting there in round 3 i'd like to see Atlanta pull that trigger...or really in good runningback available. Also finding some players who can actually cover people in the secondary would be nice. It seems like every year the Falcons take a cornerback or two and none of them stick. Finally i'd be very happy if Atlanta took a wide receiver somewhere in the middle rounds to start grooming a replacement for Michael Jenkins. Anyways those are my thoughts. I doubt I'm even gonna watch much of the draft since I watch actual TV shows on Thursday, will have something better to do on Friday, and Saturday is just late rounds. So good luck Dirty Birds, we got a Super Bowl to win next year.
well that's probably that for former Auburn QB and one time 1st round draft pick Jason Campbell. just call it another young NFL QB that gets thrown onto the trash heap because he can't overcome his team's shortcomings, poor drafting, bad free agent moves, and lousy coaching. why teams even bother drafting quarterbacks in the 1st round anymore is kind of beyond me. if you look at all the 1st round QB picks of the last decade less than half of them made it as a starter and of that half most aren't even with their original team. Campbell will now be strapped with the BUST tag even if he showed steady improvement (despite not having much of a line or receiving corp) but he just doesn't have that IT quality to be a super star in a league and division obsessed with quarterbacks. when Washington hired Mike Shanahan i thought finally Campbell would have the coach who could take him and turn him into the type of QB that i have long imagined he could be...but the temptation of the quick fix of landing an aging (and often injured) veteran like McNabb was just too much to pass up. sure i may be biased as an Auburn fan but i really doubt this move is going to do more than make the Redskins a .500 team for a couple of seasons. more than likely Campbell is going to get cut or traded before the draft and then Washington will be just a McNabb injury (which you and i both know will happen) away from having Sexy Rexy Grossman as their starting QB.
with some luck on Campbell's part he'll end up getting picked up by a team with a solid veteran QB who needs a quality backup with some NFL starting experience and a stable coaching staff and he can learn for a few more seasons and then get his shot again in a few years...but considering the way the NFL views former 1st round QBs who didn't stick around with the team that drafted them it could be the end of his career. what a bunch of bullshit. i hate the NFL.

actually it probably wasn't the worst move in the world. this is a pretty weak QB class overall and with Jake Locker coming back for one more year, Snead could end up being the 3rd QB taken behind Jimmy Clausen and Sam Bradford. either way Ole Miss is gonna be the suck next year. so much for the Rebels becoming the NEW BIG THREAT in the SEC West. hey Ryan Mallett, i think you should go pro too.
when it comes to the NFL Draft, i am all for kids leaving school early and getting paid. with this being possibly the last year that rookies are gonna be able to sign ridiculous contracts (a rookie cap is very possible) this might the last chance the get the PAIDEST (word? fuck it, it is now!).
staying in school and being loyal and all that shit sounds nice coming from some people, but most of those people are angry old dudes on messageboards who only live for their college football teams and could care less about you kids making a living some day. i say fuck school. get paid and get laid. those are the only real joys we get outta life anyways. sure you might think it would be fun to give it one more year and try and win and championship or a Heisman trophy or some other dumb shit that doesn't buy you a giant fucking yacht and a summer home but just ask Sam Bradford how that can work out for you.
in fact if you look at QBs who were projected to be 1st round draft picks that decided to go back for one more year almost every single one of them dropped in the next draft. Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Brian Brohm, and Colt Brennan are all guys who were projected as 1st round picks (with Leinart and Quinn possible #1 overall picks) following their junior seasons and each one of them fell from where he was expected to go. Brennan who would've been a late 1st rounder or early 2nd round ended up a 6th round choice and Brohm ended up a 2nd round pick who got cut from the Packers this season because he wasn't progressing fast enough and they had no patience for him because of his 2nd round status. had he been a 1st round pick there's no way they would've given up on him so fat. this season Bradford is living proof you shouldn't go back...ever. he would've possibly been the number 1 pick in 2009 and now will most likely be the 3rd or 4th QB taken in this draft because of his injuries. he probably cost himself anywhere between 10 and 20 million because he wanted to give it "One More Year". Matt Stafford, Mark Sanchez, and Josh Freeman were smart by leaving a year early.
Anyways This is my list of the Top 10 Underclassmen who could be 1st or 2nd round picks that should say Fuck School and go get paid. i put a premium on QBs, WRs, and RBs because those are the players whose stock tends to take unexpected nosedives from year to year. note that i am not including Sam Bradford in this list because he has already stated he's going pro. 1. Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame- the golden boy of the Fighting Irish was the #1 player coming out of highschool three years ago. then he got to college and went through two years of eating shit and getting hated on and called overrated as the Irish got their asses kicked up and down the field. now in his junior season we are finally seeing what all the hype was about. it's so easy to hate this kid with his douchebag haircut, all the stupid shit he did and said when he was a recruit, and the fact he plays for Notre Dame....but honestly he looks like a future NFL QB when you watch him play. he's likely to be the #1 overall pick in the 2010 draft if he decides to leave. there is no guarantee that'll be true if he stays...especially if the Irish fire Weis and bring in a new coach with a new system. take the money and run Jimmy.
2. Jake Locker, QB, Washington- size, strength, athletic ability. he's like a west-coast Tebow with a better arm. he also plays in a pro style system that makes him much more ready for the NFL. if Clausen isn't the #1 overall pick then i have to believe Locker will be. plus it isn't like you're ever gonna win a title at Washington. get out while you still can kid.
3. Ryan Mallet, QB, Arkansas- the crop of senior QBs has some star power with Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow...but neither of those guys fits in a typical NFL offense. Ryan Mallett however is a 6 foot 7 giant with a rocket arm who is built for an NFL offense. yes, he's only a redshirt sophomore with not even two full years of starting experience but he's the most NFL-looking QB in all of college football. if he comes back next year he could have a huge year and be the top pick in 2011, but he could also come back and play like shit (ala Jevan Snead) and see his stock plummet (ala Jevan Snead). plus the selfish Auburn-loving part of me wants to get that motherfucker out of the SEC asap.
4. Javid Best, RB, California- after that bad fall he took last week i'm sure young Best probably made up his mind that he's leaving school at the end of the year. if i was him i wouldn't even bother coming back and finishing the season. i'd just worry about getting in shape and getting healed for the combine. he's an easy 1st rounder with this year's weak crop of runningbacks.
5. Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech- big, strong, and fast. just like the NFL likes em. all runningbacks worth a shit should leave as soon as they are eligible because the League chews you up and spits you out quicker than any other position. every year you waste in college is a year less you will have to earn cash.
6. Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina- outside of left tackles and QBs, the position that draft gurus fall in love with the most are can't-miss defensive tackles. Austin is this year's top junior DT...which means he'll easily be a top 15 pick if he leaves early.
7. Eric Berry, SS, Tennessee- Eric Berry woulda been a 1st round pick after his Freshman year if he could've left school. there's no way he'll come back for one more year. not with the likelihood that he'll be a top 5 pick.
8. ALL LEFT TACKLES PROJECTED TO BE 1st Round picks- if you are a big left tackle and you are a junior or a draft eligible sophomore and somebody somewhere told you that someone might take you in the 1st round...go get rich motherfucker. the NFL loves you and wants to give you all their money.
9. Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame- Tate will probably only be a 2nd round draft pick, but with Clausen more the likely leaving he'd be smart to follow his QB into the draft. wide receivers stock is the most schizophrenic anyways. any WR who is predicted as a 1st or 2nd round choice is insane to go back to school for another year.
10. Damian Williams, WR, USC- USC wideouts have been a bit of a disappointment in the NFL in recent years. this starts to create a bias against you in the minds of scouts. right now Williams is being talked about as a 1st or 2nd rounder. no use if testing that for one more season.
and one more bonus player that i will file under: i don't want him to go pro but i have a sneaking suspicion he will.
Lee Ziemba, OT, Auburn- sorry Tigers fans. don't shoot me for pointing out the obvious. right now Ziemba is a projected 2nd rounder. but there are almost always between 8 and 10 tackles who go in the top 32 picks these days. with his size he could easily fall into the late 1st rounder status. this would be a crushing blow to Auburn with their depth problems on the line...but it's a very real problem. just sayin'.

so apparently the Jaguars are already thinking about drafting Football Jesus to help bring fans back to their boring team. i'd call this a no-brainer for at least the first couple of seasons until Tebow flames out and begins his quest to become either the new Jerry Falwell or a Republican Senator from the state of Florida and eventually the President.

And Sam Bradford is another living monument to the lesson that if you are a QB who people consider a 1st round draft pick then you need to go pro right fucking then. Brian Brohm, Matt Lienart, Brady Quinn, etc..., all just shook their head knowingly when you got your ass busted up by that Mormon missle.
i like to imagine that while Auburn coaches are riding around the state of Alabama in this sweet ride that they are listening to this jam. so 7 Auburn coaches are gonna be out and about on their 1st ever "Tiger Prowl" (which when you sub the word Tiger for Cougar, sounds kinda like what hot ladies in their 40s do) selling the Auburn program to the top recruits in the state of Alabama. which is you know, like awesome and stuff. i mean, rolling up to some 16/17 year old kid's house in a white limo with an AU logo on the side is the sort of ridiculous stunt that might very well impress a possible recruit. all i really hope is that they can find some future NFL talent, because watching last weekend's draft was a painful reminder to me that as far as recruiting and developing talent goes...Auburn has totally fallen off. just looking at the 2004 and 2005 recruiting classes (aka the ones that would've been directly influenced by the 2004 SEC Title and undefeated season we are all so proud of, Auburn hasn't been doing so hot at doing much with that talent.
the 04 class only had four 4 star recruits. 1 of them got drafted last year (Pat Sims) and the other 3 (Leon Hart, Tony Bell, & Lemarcus Rowell) either never made it to campus or never played a roll for the Tigers at all. members of that class who did make it to the NFL were Tyronne Green (who was a 2 star DT) and David Irons. Tristan Davis and Brad Lester were also members of that class that went undrafted this last weekend and are still waiting to receive free agent contracts. that's a pretty fucking terrible recruiting class if you ask me.
the 05 class had eight players with a 4 star grade or higher (Tray Blackmon being the lone 5 star and most notable bust in recent memory) and of those players None have been drafted and only Montez Billings, Tommy Trott, & Gabe McKenzie are still members of the team and i can't imagine any of them are locks to be NFL players. all the players from that class who were drafted were 3 stars or lower and include Jerraud Powers, Jonathan Wilhite, and Sen'Derrick Marks (who was a 2 star)...but that's it. just 3 players. there are still some guys from that class who contribute to the team like Aarion Savage, Walter McFadden, & Antonio Coleman and each of those 3 may very well have an NFL future but considering that was Auburn's recruiting class following their greatest season in school history...well you gotta say to all these claims that Tuberville quit recruiting look pretty valid.
whatever this new coaching staff does, they need to find some NFL talent again...or it's down to the cellar for Auburn. i mean fucking San Jose State had as many players get drafted as Auburn did this year.
upgrading to a stretch Hummer is a good start...i hope. althought you guys really should've thought about a hybrid.

ESPN already has their projections for the top 10 picks in the 2010 draft and no surprise Mel Kiper has Oklahoma QB, Sam Bradford listed as the number 1 overall player. that's the same thing he said about Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, and Brian Brohm going into their senior seasons, who each plummeted in their respective drafts. it should be noted that Mel had Louisville QB, Hunter Cantwell listed as a possible 1st rounder last year and he didn't even get selected at all last weekend. what does all this say really? it says that a Mel can't predict the future (although he did say Matt Stafford would be a #1 pick coming out of highschool...so kudos) and it also says that if you are draft eligible and someone wants to take you in the 1st round you need to say, "So long coach, thanks for everything...but i'm gonna go get paid."
why any college player stays in school is sort of beyond me...unless your draft stock isn't that good (PJ Hill, what were you thinking?). loyalty is great and all but it sure as shit doesn't pay the bills. an example is Auburn cornerback Jerraud Powers who left the Tigers after his junior year and most fans (myself included) couldn't understand why. Powers himself said he didn't think going back to school would help his draft stock much and he ended up getting the last laugh when we was drafted in the 3rd round by the Colts...much higher than any Auburn fans or draft "experts" predicted. had Powers gone back to school this season he could've MAYBE been an All SEC selection and jumped up to the 2nd round...or he could've lost his starting job to the seemingly more talented Sophomore Neiko Thorpe or gotten injured and risked not being drafted at all. you just never know what the year of college football can bring you...just ask Sen'Derrick Marks who was a Playboy Pre-Season All American and ranked as the top defensive tackle in the 2009 draft before the 08 season started and then ended up getting drafted at the tail end of the 2nd round. or how bout LSU's DT Ricky Jean-Francois who was also thought to be a 1st rounder and then fell all the way to the 7th. both of those players stock was hurt because of inconsistent play last season and poor performance by each of their teams.
Sam Bradford had to be watching the draft on Saturday and thinking to himself that he just passed up on 41 million dollars guaranteed when he watched Matt Stafford put on that Lions hat and hold up his jersey with Roger Goodell. Hell Josh Freeman might've been the smartest kid in this entire draft when he decided to go pro and somehow ended up in the 1st round because there weren't any QBs worth a shit drafting after Stafford and Sanchez. never assume that Number 1 is gonna wait for you...there could always be a Matt Ryan waiting in the weeds to come along and steal your thunder, Brian Brohm can only nod his head in acknowledgment.
one final thought about next year's draft and then i'll stop talking about it.

that's Tim Tebow's 3 year stats (only 2 of those were as a starter) vs. Josh Freeman's 3 year stats (all of those as a starter) not to mention Tebow has won 2 national titles and a Heisman and Josh Freeman went to the Texas Bowl once. but yeah, Tim Tebow is gonna be a Tight End in the NFL and Josh Freeman is gonna be the future of the Tampa Bay Bucs. i'm calling bullshit on that.

my thoughts about each of the Falcons draft picks and then some lists of players i felt like they shouldn't have passed on.
1st Rd. Peria Jerry, DT Ole Miss. = AWESOME!!!!
2nd Rd. William Moore, S Missouri. = AWESOME!!!
obviously i am super excited about both of these players because they were the top 2 guys i had on my Friday wishlist/projection. and anytime i am ever right about something then it's gonna make me happy. they filled their 2 most obvious holes and added players who will start next season. i felt like each guy was the best player available at their position going into this draft and it's hard for me to say i would have preferred another player at either spot...but as for rounds 3-7....well i'll just say i am glad we made that move to get Tony Gonzalez.
3rd Rd. Chris Owens, CD San Jose State.
i saw this guy play once ever in some random game on ESPN vs. Nevada and he got torched by the wideout he was covering on 2 straight plays...after that i know nothing about this guy.

i saw him play in the Division IAA play offs and he looked like a beast against the lower level competition...but i'm just never going to be a fan of the Falcons drafting guys from small schools, not when the SEC produces the best defensive players in the country and there were plenty of guys available. i don't think this was a bad pick at all...i fact Sidbury will more than likely be a player who sees a lot of time on the field next season at either linebacker or defensive end...especially in pass rushing situations. i wouldn't be surprised if he and Jamaal Anderson don't form a rotation with one another. but still i didn't jump for joy at this pick.
other players they could've drafted: Gerald McRath, LB, Southern Miss. Tyronne Green, G, Auburn. Terrance Taylor, DT, Michigan.
5th Rd. William Middleton, CB Furman.
another small school player. i honestly know nothing about middleton so i don't have much to say. he could be a gem, he could get cut. the Falcons seem to love collecting questionable cornerbacks.

Middleton possesses prototypical size for a cornerback. His strengths include overall ball skills and the ability to be effective in run support. However, some tightness in his hips creates some concerns about his ability to limit separation.

obviously Atlanta needed to add some depth on the offensive line and a player the could develop to be a starter. i love Reynolds size 6 foot 8 & 310 pounds. but there were a 2 lineman available at this spot who were both more productive in this spot. Herman Johnson the huge guard from LSU and Duke Robinson the All American guard from Oklahoma that would've made me more excited. still tackle was a need so i'm not gonna cry my eyes out about this pick.
other players they could've drafted: Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma. Herman Johnson, G, LSU.
6th Rd. Spencer Adkins, ILB, Miami.
linebacker was a position of need, right behind safety and defensive tackle. so why did Atlanta wait until the 6th round and then draft a player who lost his starting job to a freshman and plays the same position as last year's 2nd round pick Curtis Lofton? i don't get this pick at all. i'll be shocked if he even makes the squad. i would've much rather seen them take Georgia linebacker Danelle Ellerbe who at least has some boom potential.

Atkins lacks instincts and it's going to take some major repetitions for him to catch on. He also has durability issues. However, he is a quick-twitched athlete who possesses above-average range.

a good pick up in the 7th round. they snag a local kid who can help add some depth to the line. i have nothing bad to say about this, BUT i think they should've just signed this kid as a free agent and instead drafted LSU defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois...a player who was the MVP of the 2006 national title game and was originally thought of as a 1st round talent who could've played at either tackle or defensive end for the Falcons and i think was a steal in the 7th round.

so the weekend came and went and after it was all said and done 3 former Auburn players were taken in the 2009 NFL Draft. Sen'Derrick Marks in the 2nd round to the Titans, Jerraud Powers in the 3rd to the Colts, and Tyronne Green in the 4th to the Chargers. all 3 players were taken higher than Mel Kiper projected and all 3 are likely to see time next season for their respective teams.
Powers is the player i am most happy for as a lot of fans were wondering why he even declared for the draft. i had assumed he would be a 5th or 6th round selection, so when i saw his name pop up on the screen early Sunday morning it put a smile on my face.
some other Auburn players received free agent contracts, as Tez Doolittle will get a shot as a Seahawk and Rod Smith will be joing Green in San Diego. Brad Lester and Tristan Davis have as of now not been given offers that i am aware of. it's hard to imagine that Davis won't get invited to someone's camp for a tryout as a returner and special teams player with his speed.
I'm pretty sure the Jets will just boo anyone. I'm also 100% sure that none of these guido douchebags have ever seen any of these kids play a single down of college football. Granted I think Shonn Green is gonna be a bust (although him being a 3rd rounder sorta takes him out of the bust category) but I know these idiots don't know who the fuck he is...much less that he rushed for 100 yards in EVERY SINGLE GAME last season.
Mel Kiper compared Mark Sanchez to Chad Pennington (before the arm injury)...I'm not exactly sure how the Jets feel about that.

The Bengals just landed Michael Johnson from Ga Tech. What a steal in the 3rd round. I think so far the Bengals have had the best fucking draft of any team. 4 interesting picks in a row for the 5th round: the Vikings got Jasper Brinkley from South Carolina was awesome when he wasn't hurt. Rhett Bomar to the Giants could be an interesting project to develop behind Eli. that guy was the #1 QB coming out of highschool in 2004. i think he'll be a better pro QB than Josh Freeman for sure. and then James Casey, the tight end from Rice, who was a pass catching machine this year...he could be a steal for Houston. and another player who i think could be a huge BOOM is former Florida tight end Cornelius Ingram aka the freak who was awesome his junior year for the Gators and then got hurt and didn't play last year. he has 1st round talent and the Eagles will total turn him into a weapon.
Marcus Freeman is off the board, as much as i don't like Ohio State players in this draft, i wouldn't have had an issue with Atlanta taking this guy.
