Nick Fairley was named Defensive Player of the Year
Cam Newton was named Offensive Player of the Year
Gene Chizik was named Coach of the Year

ONLY 4 Auburn players made the ALL-SEC 1st and 2nd teams (all were 1st teamers.) Newton, Fairly, as well as offensive linemen Ryan Pugh and Lee Ziemba. Darvin Adams gets snubbed again...but to be fair WR was a loaded position this season in the SEC so it's hard to argue about him getting left off despite over 900 yards recieving. i would've liked to have seen Mike Berry get some love and Josh Bynes, and how the hell is Michael Dyer not on here? he was way more deserving than Mark Ingram or Trent Richardson...but it's all about big names with this sorta thing. way too many Bama players on here for a team that essentially finished 4th in the SEC West.

East Bound & Down?

So it's looking more and more like Texas A&M is about to become the 13th member of the SEC. Rumored targets for that 14th spot seem to be the usual suspects of Clemson, Georgia Tech (my vote), Miami, FSU (my 2nd choice), Virginia Tech (boring), and possibly even Big 12 leftovers Kansas (huh?) or Missouri (another fucking Tiger!) The addition of Mizzou kind of makes the most sense as far as expanding the leagues footprint into new markets goes. It would give the league a midwestern team with two large tv markets (Kansas City & St. Louis). Where Texas A&M seems like a perfect fit, it's hard to imagine Missouri as a member of the conference...but then again Arkansas doesn't really make much sense either. One thing that can be certain is that if the SEC adds two Big 12 schools then Auburn is gonna be the SEC West school sent packing to the East.

Auburn moving the Eastern Division and back to yearly rivalry games with Florida and Tennessee would fire up oldschool fans, despite the fact we'd lose our yearly matchups with LSU that most of us love so much. and the lighter competition near the bottom of the league with Kentucky and Vandy would be nice (not that recent matchups should prove that to be a fact). Also the dream scenario of possibly facing Alabama in an SEC title game some day would suddenly be a possibility. And who doesn't want to see that?

i've been meaning to post about this all week but i was busy.

so Cari dropped this knowledge to me via email that she got a press release informing her that the Ole' Miss Rebels would be taking part in a reality TV show.

USSE has been contracted by TruTV to develop this show about the personalities and daily occurrences of the Ole Miss Football team. Focus will be on the trials and tribulations of current and incoming student athletes as they try to make the starting team. Returning upper classmen must fend off the challenge of the "new kids on the block."

The show will also revolve around the personalities of Head Coach Houston Nutt and his assistants. The audience will get a glimpse of the on-field and behind the scenes action, getting up front and personal with the coaches and players. Shooting will take place during the summer training camp period.

can you say distraction?

i mean i know Ole Miss is everybody's hip pick to be a top 10 team and maybe win the SEC West but does anyone remember that they are OLE FUCKING MISS...a team that hasn't won an SEC title since 1963 and is the ONLY team in the West that's never even been to an SEC championship game (yeah even Mississippi State was able to pull that off once). they are also a team that is coached by Houston Nutt...who does fine job as a darkhorse that kinda comes out of nowhere but isn't really big on living up to expectations. if you are betting on the Rebels winning the West this year then i will gladly take your money from you. i think they'll win 8 games...MAX and be lucky if they don't end up in 4th place behind LSU, Bama, and Arkansas.

LSU wins another freaking championship in something

so yesterday while i was watching LSU pound the living shit out of Texas in the College World Series to claim their 6th National Title (SEC! SEC! SEC!) i saw that the star of LSU's team in none other than wide receiver Jared Mitchell.

Mitchell was named MVP of the tournament and seemingly destroyed Texas single handed, yesterday. Mitchell was also a member of the 2007 LSU Football team that won the BCS title...so that makes this kid a national champ in two different team sports. has that ever happened before? i mean i'm sure it has as there are often role players from the football team that play on college baseball teams, but i honestly can't think of anyone who comes to mind. oh yeah, Mitchell also was a 1st round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox....it's like Rod Stewart says, "Some guys have all the luck."

2009 SEC Predictions

so i've inspected all the preseason college football mags and ingested their often highly inaccurate predictions and now i feel like it's my turn to throw out some bullshit that won't be right and will change my mind about a week before the season starts anyways.


based on all the mags Florida is the out and out favorite not only to win the league but also to win the national title...and why wouldn't they be? they've got almost there entire team returning, the best QB in the SEC...and probably the nation, an offense that can't be stopped, and a defense full of 4 and 5 star depth, and a pretty cushy schedule to boot. if Florida can't go undefeated this season then it's never gonna happen for the Gators.


Ole Miss is the trendy pick to win the West and be a top 10 team based on the way they dismantled Texas Tech and knocked off LSU at the end of last year. Ole Miss was a sleeper team for me last season who i thought would probably win 8 games...they exceeded those expectations. this year anything less than 10 wins will be a disappointment for the Rebels. people are looking for a top 10 finish, a New Years Bowl, and maybe even an outside shot at a National title. they've got a couple of darkhorse Heisman candidates in QB Jevan Sneed and WR/Returner/Wild Rebel QB Dexter McCluster. this is it, this is there year....which means they're probably gonna struggle to win 8 games and end up in the Music City Bowl. i mean this is Ole Miss we are talking about, they couldn't win an SEC title with Eli Manning...plus Houston Nutt, despite being a good coach, is never one who delivers on expectations.


Alabama and LSU seem like Florida's to REAL contenders for the SEC. LSU had a bit of a nightmare season last year, for them but the pick-six machine Jarrett Lee is no longer behind center and instead the athletic Jordan Jefferson will be leading the Tigers this season...assuming he can hold off the 5 star freshman Russell Sheppard. LSU has the best runningback in the league in Charles Scott and a wealth of speedsters at receiver and runningback. last year their defense was worthless, but with all the talent they've recruited and with a new defensive coordinator it seems unlikely that trend will continue. still Les Miles is a bit of a retard, so i could see LSU fucking up and losing to some teams that they've got no business losing to and missing that trip to Atlanta.

Alabama has a young and talented defense, a number of quality runningbacks, and one of the two best wide receivers in the SEC in Julio Jones. the Tide do have to replace a number of offensive linemen and will have a brandnew QB...but it's not like Nick Saban asks his QBs to do very much anyways. i assume this years Bama will just run the ball even more than last year's team and try to shutdown everyone they play with good defense....VERY boring, yet effective. it's like Big 10 football but with Southern accents!


Georgia is getting the also-ran treatment from most everyone...which is to be expected when you lose the talent they did. still The Dawgs have probably one of the 2 best offensive lines in the SEC, some talent at tailback, a superstar wide receiver, and a senior QB with some experience. this looks a lot like that 2005 Georgia team that came out of nowhere to win the SEC. now Georgia's schedule is fucking brutal with a murderous 3 game start that could easily have UGA at 1-2 or even 0-3, and then they've got trips to LSU, Jacksonville, and don't forget those rivalry games against Auburn (who will be looking to end UGA's 3 game winning streak) and Georgia Tech (who'll be looking to get a streak going of their own). this Georgia team could end up being 11-2 or 7-5...its anybody's guess.


the most obvious Darkhorse this season has gotta be Arkansas. after looking like a trainwreck at the beginning of the year the Hawgs suddenly turned into a competent team thanks to runningback Michael Smith. Arkansas had upsets over Auburn and LSU and just missed out on a bowl game. now with former Michigan QB Ryan Mallett as the QB, coach Bobby "Pussyface" Petrino has a talented signal caller to lead his very productive offense. i see Arkansas knocking off UGA and then upsetting one of the top 3 teams in the West of Ole Miss, Alabama, or LSU and finishing up with an 8-4 or 9-3 record and a trip to the Peach or Cotton Bowl and a 3rd place finish in the West and a top 25 ranking.

South Carolina, Vanderbilt (can you imagine Vandy making 2 straight bowls?!), Tennessee, and Auburn all should be able to put together enough wins to make it to Bowl games...but i don't see any of them realistically challenging of the SEC. Kentucky will probably scare a few teams but i think their recent bowl streak comes to an end and if Mississippi State wins more than 1 game this year in the league then i will be shocked.

my scientific rankings of the QB situations in the SEC going into the 2009 Season.

1. Florida

obviously they've got Tebow so that means they are about 100,000 miles ahead of the next team.

2. Ole Miss

Jevan Snead is a solid college QB with some possible NFL 1st round ability. that about covers the sure things in the SEC this year.

3. Arkansas

Ryan Mallett was a 5 star QB who played a bit in Michigan's pro style offense his freshman season before deciding to get the hell out of town when RichRod and the Spread hit town. under Bobby Petrino Mallett could be scary. he's got the size and the arm strength to be a future 1st round pick. this is his first season in the SEC but his overall potential makes him worthy of the 3rd spot.

4. LSU

Jordan Jefferson looked pretty good at the end of the season. he's a good athlete and he's got some experience but Russel Sheppard is a five star talent that could totally steal his job away if Jefferson struggles this year. Jarrett Lee also still exists...which isn't really a good thing, unless you enjoy interceptions returned for touchdowns.

5. South Carolina

Stephen Garcia has thus far been a bit of a disappointment for the 'Cocks both on and off the field. he's the only 4 star talent the Ole' Ball Coach has had in Columbia and this is his 3rd year in the system...one would have to think Garcia well make some major improvements this season, or maybe he'll get arrested 2 weeks before the season starts and get kicked off the team. on a side note, i really wish he'd grow the locks back.

6. Georgia

UGA's QB situation is kinda similar to Stafford's freshman season. Joe Cox is a senior who has some playing experience (it was he that lead the comeback win over Colorado as a freshman...not Matt Stafford) plus the Dawgs have an athletic backup in Logan Gray and a couple of 4 star freshmen backing him up. i have a feeling that if Georgia struggles early we might see as many as 3 different starters for the Bulldogs. during the Richt era UGA has always had a solid enough starter, it's hard to imagine one of the 4 QBs won't emerge as pretty good college QB.

7. Kentucky

Mike Hartline and Randall Cobb are both Sophomores and they both played last season. Hartline's the passer and Cobb is the athlete. neither guy blew anyone's doors off, but Cobb gives the Wildcats the best chance to win.

8. Auburn

Kodi Burns was the definition of inconsistent...actually he was more the definition of useless for most of the season with a few flashes of brilliance. this is most likely his last chance. Neil Caudle has never started a game and doesn't have much playing experience. Chris Todd only has 1 arm...and it's not the one he throws with. and then everyone else is a freshman. who fucking knows what is gonna happen, hopefully the running game can cover their asses enough that none of this will matter.

9. Alabama

Greg McElroy has very little playing experience and a mostly new offensive line in front of him...not to mention he's shackled with that NUMBER 12 JERSEY. luckily Bama has a solid running game and some guy named Julio Jones for McElroy to throw to...that should be good enough to cover for him.

10. Mississippi State

Tyson Lee is a senior who started last season for the Bulldogs, but he's not athletic enough for Dan Mullen to run his offense properly and Mississippi State lacks any play makers to help him out.

11. Vanderbilt

no team won more games in spite of their QBs than Vandy. Mackenzi Adams looked like Jay Cutler vs. Auburn but was pretty shitty against the rest of the league. they've got some other dude too who started playing at the end of the season but i totally forgot his name...and there's probably some freshman who'll show up out of nowhere and take a few random snaps for no apparent reason. jesus, Vandy would be better off just playing defense the whole game.

12. Tennessee

Jonathan Crompton was probably the worst QB in the league last year and he still has his starting job and the Vols failed to recruit a freshman they could develop this season and insert if the offense is a total disaster again this year. Kiffin better learn to work miracles if he thinks Crompton is his guy.

Kick Out The Jams, Motherfucker! SEC Tournament Style

and so it begins...the quest to be the tournament champion of the biggest CLUSTERFUCK of a BCS level Basketball conference...it's much like being the skinniest fat kid or the coolest member of Menudo. this year's SEC tournament is taking place in Tampa and it'll have to conjure up a tornado hitting their stadium and have a miracle run by one of the SEC's worst teams if it wants to match any of the drama from last year's SEC championship.

what we need to know: there are 2 locks from the SEC right now...LSU and Tennessee, neither team has much to gain from the tournament other than seeding in the NCAAs, so you can probably just cancel out either of them from taking home the tournament. instead there's a dogpile of next level teams all fighting it out for that final AT LARGE bid to the big dance. if the SEC gets more than 3 invites we will all be surprised. in the chase for spot #3 are the Florida Gators, South Carolina Gamecocks, Auburn Tigers have the strongest claim and Kentucky Wildcats, Vanderbilt Commodores, and Mississippi State Bulldogs all could have outside shots or could be out and out tournament champs. right now South Carolina would be the most likely to get that at large bid...you could even call them Lock-ish thanks to a 21-8 record (and a 3-2 record against top 25 teams). Auburn is the hottest team having won 8 of their last 9. Florida is the team with the most street cred because of their recent success. and Kentucky is Kentucky...don't doubt that if the Wildcats could somehow make it to the Tournament finals that they won't get a spot.

smart money: bet on South Carolina to win the tournament and eliminate the hopes of any and every other SEC bubble team.

worth believing in: Auburn is the hottest team, if they can make a run and knock off a team like South Carolina or Florida they may just get an at large bid, but I'd rather just have them win the whole thing and not worry about it.

the team that'll probably just go ahead and win this shit: Vanderbilt

the wild card lousy team that'll pull a Georgia this year: Mississippi

Young Men Gettin' Paid

so the deadline for early entry into the NFL has come and gone. some BCS title contenders are feeling the burn, probably none more vocally the Mr. Win Forever himself over losing his starting QB.

Carrol is taking some heat over this because he seems to be saying that Mark Sanchez if gonna fail. whatever, he's got 3 Blue-Chip QBs backing Sanchez up, the Trojans will be fine. they've got a bigger problem replacing almost their entire defense anyways. i'm sure Mitch Mustain or Aaron Corp will be fine.

the real winner of TEAM MOST FUCKED BY EARLY ENTRIES would be Athens, Georgia's very own Georgia Bulldogs...who lose their 2 best offensive weapons plus their best defensive back (luckily Reshad Jones opted to stay for another year or that very torchable secondary may have been completely in flames all year).

a close 2nd place in their contest might be UGA's divisional rival, South Carolina who will lose All-SEC tight end Jared Cook, safety Emmanuel Cook, and cornerback (and winner of greatest name ever) Captain Munnerlyn...luckily they're the South Carolina Gamecocks and they were gonna go 7-5 or 6-6 next season no matter who was playing anyways.

Bama loses their All-Universe tackle Andre Smith, but everyone knew that kid would be 3 and done from the moment he signed with the Tide. when you're considered the next Orlando Pace it's really just a waiting game. Alabama also says bye to their leading rusher Glenn Coffee but i don't anticipate that being a very big deal with Roy Upchurch, Mark Ingram, and incoming freshman Trent Richardson all in the mix. i think Coffee knew to get out while the getting was good so that he didn't end up like Ken Darby. Bama's biggest news was that Mount Cody was coming back for 1 more year, making sure that you still won't be able to run on the Tide next year.

LSU loses Ricky Jean-Francois and Brandon LaFell. neither of which i think are as good as they were always hyped to be. the Tigers will be fine.

Ole Miss totally dodged a bullet when Greg Hardy announced he would be returning to school. the Rebels could be a top 10 team next year if things break their way.

Vandy lost their only real star when DJ Moore decided to ride off into the sunset as the hero of VANDY4EVER's magical season and into the NFL.

everyone at Auburn expected Sen'Derrick Marks to leave school early from the beginning of this season and i think it was more important that Antonio Coleman decided to come back for his senior year than it will be losing Marks (especially now that former five star JC transfer Raven Gray is gone. a quick thought, when was the last time one of Auburn's 5 Star JC transfers actually ended up being worth a shit and sticking around? every one of these guys seems to disappear before ever doing a thing for the Tigers). Auburn's biggest loss will be cornerback Jerraud Powers. Powers was the teams' most solid defensive back the last 2 seasons and leaves the Tigers with some serious issues with depth at corner next year. hopefully Neiko Thorpe can become the star that a lot of people think he'll be.

and then of course Florida is still favored to win it all next year even if Harvin is leaving school...once The Tebow said "let's do it again next year!" things were pretty much set in stone. the fact that Brandon Spikes is coming back too is just an added bonus.

my early lean on the top 5 underclassmen who will be BUST-TASTIC for whatever team who drafts them.

1. Josh Freeman, QB Kansas State. sure he's 8 feet tall and 300 pounds and has a rocket for an arm, but what did that ever do for Kansas State. i am finding a hard team remembering a more overrated prospect who came into college football and accomplished less than nothing (besides beating Texas twice). to be honest the only memorable moment i can come away with from Freeman's college career would be this little nugget of joy...

yeah he looks really big and strong in that pocket while he's getting nailed by Quentin Groves, doesn't he?

2. Nate Davis, QB Ball State. did anyone actually watch the final two game implosion that Davis put on against Buffalo and Tulsa? and some people are saying this kid is gonna be a late 1st or 2nd round pick? really!?!?!

3. Shonn Green, RB Iowa. hmmmm....Big 10 runningback with questionable speed who you never even heard of before this season. yeah, i'd avoid this one at all costs.

4. Brian Hartline, WR Ohio State. white wide receivers from Ohio State = no thank you, i'll pass. seriously i'd think about drug testing Hartline because he's obviously smoking something if he thinks he'll be a 1st day pick in this year's draft.

5. PJ Hill, RB Wisconsin. hahaha, just kidding. noone will be dumb enough to draft his fat ass thereby saving him from BUST status. Hill, like Ron Dayne with less speed.

Not that there's much to talk about right now anyways. Another Dawg is going pro, as Asher Allen throws his name into the draft. So UGA is losing their top 2 offensive players and their best defender (come back to reality...Curran is totally overrated)...so I'm thinking those 09 Bulldogs are still good enough for 2nd in the East but that might not mean much next year with the real battle going on out West between Bama, LSU, & the suddenly relevant Ole Miss Rebels. Don't sleep on the Vols either, their defense was solid...if Kiffin can even get a slight jump in production from the offense then Tennessee should be a 9 win team...I think. I'm sure the preseason mags will all try and sell us on THIS BEING THE YEAR for the Gamecocks...yeah how many years have you been selling me that, Phil Steele? It's never happening. I do think Arkansas will be the most improved team in the SEC while Kentucky & Vandy return to being bottom dwellers. As for my Tigers...at least there's still Mississippi State. But 2010 The Tiger Odyssey is gonna rule!

so that's what, 5 titles in 11 seasons? 2 for Florida and LSU each plus the Vols and then you've also got Auburn's '04 season and last year's Georgia team with #2 rankings over that span as well. not a bad run, especially in a year when the conference was down and the Big 12 had taken our spot as the best league in the country.....uh yeah, how'd the Big 12 South do in their bowls again? 1-3. ok, nuff said about that subject.

secondly it's time to give Percy Harvin and Tim Tebow their giant props. they are the best duo in college football this decade this side of Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. Harvin was easily the championship game MVP, rushing for over a hundred yards on 1 leg and being his awesome ass little self. do i think he'll be good in the pros? i have no fucking clue, does it matter? nope. he's just awesome. and as far as Tebow goes....i mean if he NEVER plays another down of college football he's already the Greatest Player In SEC History. Yeah i fucking said it. sorry Bo, DMAC, Danny Wuerffel, and yeah even you Herschel. Tebow has won 2 national titles, a Heisman Trophy, and dominates like no QB can with his running and passing ability....plus he's a fucking leader on and off the field and i'd trade away 5 years of my life for Auburn to have a guy like that behind center.

as far as the game itself last night...we didn't settle anything. the only thing we learned is that the BCS still sucks and that we need a fucking playoff, but we already knew that...so yeah, we didn't learn shit. and so as much as i think the Gators deserve the BCS title i can not in good faith vote them number 1 in my poll that matters to absolutely noone but me and has no effect on the universe at large...but hey man, gotta have some fucking principles about something. and so i'm splitting it up.

Fulmer fired...or forced out...or what-the-fuck-evered, he's gone at the end of the season is all it really matters. dude was a lifer and now he's gonna be sitting at home and not dealing with his ungrateful fanbase next season. guy won a national title 10 years ago and now he's done. the SEC is fucking crazy...let this be a message to any young coach out there who wants to come join this shitstorm. this is also all the more reason for Auburn to NOT FIRE Tommy Tuberville. Tennessee has got more money and more prestige and they are THE state school. The Vols will attract far better candidates than the Tigers can. Tommy gets one more year if the board of trustees know what's best for the University's football team. if Tommy can't get this thing turned around next season, well then maybe we bring in some new blood. but right now we're just asking for the leftovers.

The Big 12 vs. The SEC...who you got?

much has been said this year about the Big 12's place as the top conference in college football after pretty much crowning the SEC as champs of the conference wars with back-to-back national titles at the beginning of the year. and it's hard to argue with the fact that the Big 12 may have temporarily overtaken the SEC as top dog...at least for this season. they've got 4 teams in the AP top 10. they've got 3 or 4 QBs who are Heisman contenders. and they've got some of the best offenses in college football. The SEC on the other hand has the best defenses in college football, the returning Heisman winner, and 3 top 10 teams (with one other just peaking in from #11), and from top to bottom claims to be the most competitive conference in college football. likely both leagues will send between 7-9 teams to bowl games and both will send 2 schools to BCS bowl games. the possibility of a Big 12 vs. SEC national title is also very much alive with Texas and Alabama currently ranked 1 and 2. but even if the SEC or Big 12 team won that possible national title showdown it doesn't really answer the question of which league is deeper or better. and so let's pretend that at the end of the season we took all the schools in both conferences in a 12 on 12 football battle to lay claim to greatest football league in all the land. the following would be the possible matchups based on records and comparability of talent.

Texas vs. Alabama
the clash of the top two teams in the country. the Longhorns' offense vs. the Tide defense could make for an epic contest. but i think this game comes down to three words JOHN PARKER WILSON and if i had to bet the farm on McCoy vs. Wilson then i am going with McCoy. Texas wins.

Oklahoma vs. Georgia
Oklahoma's firepower vs. Georgia's balance. the Dawgs have got the stars to hang around with the Sooners and it would be awesome to watch a duel of this years likely top QB pick, Stafford vs next year's top pick, Bradford. i expect a highscoring game...but i give the edge to Georgia because of Oklahoma's recent trouble in bowl games. win for Georgia.

Missouri vs. Florida
two highpowered offenses lead by Heisman contender QBs. two awesome receivers in Harvin and Maclin trying to show one another up. no defense played whatsoever. Florida has too much speed and talent for Mizzou. the Gators roll for a victory.

Oklahoma State vs. LSU
Les Miles new team vs. his old team. Gundy would do his best to get the Cowboys fired up for this one, but there's no way that OK State can do to the LSU defense what they did to Mizzou. LSU BIG.

Texas Tech vs. South Carolina
The new master of the fun and gun vs. the guy who perfected it. Spurrier's team has the defense to shut down Mike Leach, but do they have the QB to match TD's if this thing turned into a scoring orgy? i give the slight edge to the Red Raiders...but don't be surprised if the Gamecocks pull this one off. Texas Tech wins a close one.

Kansas vs. Kentucky
the battle of the basketball schools who suddenly discovered they could play football too. last year's Kentucky team would have given Kansas a great matchup but this year's Jayhawks would have too much fire power for the Wildcats to handle. Win Kansas.

Nebraska vs. Tennessee
your once proud college football program is now a big fucking joke. sad. Tennessee has no offense. Nebraska has no defense. i see turnover city in this game, but somehow some way the Vols pull out the victory thanks to their defense.

Colorado vs. Arkansas
The Hawgs can't play any defense and are turnover machines on offense, but the Buffs just lack the playmakers. Arkansas wins a shootout.

Kansas State vs. Ole Miss
on paper Nutt's team has more talent...but if there is a more schizophrenic team in the country then i don't know who they are. Kansas State wins...but don't ask me how.

Baylor vs. Vanderbilt
the Nerd Bowl. Vandy was hot for a quick minute...but Baylor has got my favorite freshman QB in the nation in Robert Griffin. The Bears win on the legs and arm of Griffin.

Texas A&M vs. Auburn
Coach Tubs and the Tigers vs. that team that he supposedly was gonna leave Auburn for. this might actually be a team that Auburn can beat. might being the key word. Auburn wins a strange turnover filled disaster 3-0.

Iowa State vs. Mississippi State
Iowa State was Croomed the second they played this game. Mississippi State is terrible, but are they THAT terrible to lose to Iowa State? i give the Bulldogs the win.

in the end i give the SEC a 7-5 advantage and they keep their title as the country's best league...or maybe i am an idiot and have no idea what i am talking about.

Auburn's Sen'Derrick Marks Ranks #5 on Rivals' List of top Underclassmen

It's never to early to start thinking about the NFL Draft...especially if you are in the state of Missouri (poor Rams and Chiefs fans). next year's draft looks like it's gonna be dominated by Juniors and Red-Shirt Sophomores, which isn't all that surprising as 2006 was one of the most talented freshman classes in the history of college football. also not that surprising it that the SEC dominates the list of quality underclassmen with 4 of the top 5 and 13 of the top 30. Georgia's dynamic backfield of Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno come in at 1 and 3. Alabama's all-everything offensive Tackle, Andre Smith, is rated as the number 2 prospect and Auburn's Sen'Derrick Marks is rated at number 5. here's a full list of Rivals.com's top 30 underclassmen.

it should be noted that there are no guarantees about any of of these kids actually declaring for the draft...but you so fucking no that Knowshon and Stafford are gonna be making that run for the NFL as soon as the clock runs out on Georgia's season this year and as an Auburn fan i couldn't be happier.

lots of Auburn players getting some love, mostly on the 2nd team. but where the fuck is Wes Byrum? he had 2 game winning kicks last year as a true freshman and was very accurate. he's a lot better kicker than Colt David. all that dude did was score a touchdown on a trick play. all in all a pretty good list of players, but John Parker Wilson? seriously? not even Kennie Bloggins would think that was appropriate. i guess it helps being the only senior QB with any experience in the SEC.

5 realistic observations of the top SEC contenders next season

1. Georgia- UGA fans are living high on the hog right now. The Dawgs are likely to be the AP number 1 team when the first poll comes out. they've got a lot of players returning from a team that went 11-2. they've got a star studded backfield of Stafford and Moreno. all iss good in the land of Athens. but when i look into my crystal ball i don't really see a National Championship. they've got one of the toughest schedules in the country that includes trips to Arizona State, LSU, Auburn, and Jacksonville to face the Gators. last season was a success for the team but they were a lot closer to having four losses than they were to being undefeated. it took Vandy fumbling as they were driving for a winning score and then UGA taking it down the field and kicking a game winning field goal to beat the Commodores. and it took overtime to beat Alabama. the Dawgs lost to a pretty average South Carolina team that always seems to play them close and then got completely blown out by Tennessee (something the Vols seem to do a lot of against Georgia). they're biggest wins were against Florida who had a banged up Quarterback and nothing you'd call a reliable secondary and then they manhandled Auburn in the second half once the Tigers forgot how to tackle. they closed out the year by destroying an overmatched and overrated Hawaii team who was really just happy to be in a BCS bowl game. so i think the number 2 ranking they ended up with was a little bit undeserving...regardless expectations have never been higher in the Bulldog Nation and anything less than the SEC title is gonna be viewed as a disappointment.


2. Florida- The Gators go into the 2008 season coming off a disappointing 2007. they lost to Auburn, LSU, and Georgia and got embarrassed by Michigan in the Capital One Bowl in a game that's score was much closer than the reality of the actual game was. The Gators have major issues with their secondary...notably that they don't know how to cover anyone. all their hopes rest on Mr. Heisman, Tim Tebow. by the end of the season last year Tebow was pretty banged up and Urban Meyer is just asking for trouble if Timmy keeps running the ball as much as he did last year. so if Florida can't find some resemblance of production from their backfield i don't see how they're gonna win the SEC east, much less find their way back to another title game.


3. Auburn- The Tigers started off the 2007 season with a pretty rough showing. they barely beat an average Kansas State team and then got embarrassed by South Florida and Mississippi State. if the Tigers hadn't pulled a huge upset win over Florida out of their ass and gotten another last second victory over Arkansas then things might have been dark and gloomy on the Plains. i wouldn't have been at all surprised if Tuberville would have bolted for Texas A&M or Arkansas following a 7-5 or 6-6 regular season leaving the Tigers completely and totally fucked. luckily they did pull off some last second heroics and despite getting crushed by the Dawgs and the Blackout fever they finished the season fairly strong. Auburn's main issues this season are who the fuck is gonna be quarterback and is this spread eagle thing gonna work or not? Auburn has been a power running team since the dawn of time, switching to a completely different philosophy is gonna create a since of dread for some Tiger fans. most teams that switch their offense generally struggle in the first couple of seasons...Auburn doesn't really have that luxury with LSU on a down year (hopefully) and with the Hydra of 4 and 5 star recruits that Saban is collecting for himself up in northern part of the state of Alabama. it's win now or else the Tigers could be left behind and my poor heart can't really handle that.


4. LSU- the defending champs are in a weird place right now. i mean on one hand they are completely and utterly loaded on both sides of the ball with future NFL talent. they've still got one of if not the best defenses in a conference built on defense. they've got speed galore. they've got a coach with balls made of brass. they've also got no idea who they're quarterback is gonna be. redshirt freshman or Harvard transfer...eh, who do you think will lose you more games? LSU still has the players to compete with Auburn for the West title. likely their yearly matchup will determine who is gonna be going to Atlanta at the end of the season, but LSU's chances of repeating as National Champs seem slim to none. maybe if they'd have kept Mike Vick Jr. on a shorter leash then things would be different. such is life.


5. Tennessee- the Vols are coming in to 08 much like they did in 07, under the radar. they've got a new QB and a new offensive coordinator, this could spell a bit of trouble. the positives are that they've got one of the best runningbacks in the whole league, a great offensive line, and some pretty good players on defense. this is gonna be a make or break year for Phil Fulmer. although he did win the East last season, it's been 10 years since the Vols actually won an SEC title. those pushpop orange wearing rednecks might be calling for blood if Tennessee finished with an 8 or 9 win season and another trip to the Outback bowl.


everyone else
Bama- still building. look out for the Tide next year. best case scenario 9 wins and a trip to the Cotton or Peach Bowl. i think Kenniebloggins will take it though.

South Carolina- another .500 season and it's probably goodbye for Spurrier who might be ready to utter the words, "I'm getting too old for this shit."

Ole' Miss- Houston Nutt is bringing crazy back. Ole' Miss has the talent to be a better team than they've been the last few years. don't expect another winless SEC season. i fully expect the Rebels to be bowl eligible and i'm predicting an upset of one of the West's big 3.

Kentucky- you guys had a good run. now it's back to reality and losing seasons. let's just hope your basketball team is better.

Mississippi State- another team who'll be crashing back to reality after a miracle 8 win season. no Croomings this year.

Arkansas- the Hawgs are about as talent depleted as you can be, no QB, no proven runningback, a new coach, a new scheme. expect a lot of losing for new Bobby Petrino in his first (and maybe only...just kidding) year at Arkansas.

Vanderbilt- the bowl-less streak continues.

Prophesizing The 2008 SEC Season

file this under predictions that will surely be wrong.

so 2008 is setting itself up as a big year for the SEC. the league is coming off back to back national titles and will likely be in the running for a 3rd. there will probably be 3 teams in the preseason top 10 and 2 in the top 5, in Florida and Georgia. 2 of the top Heisman contenders make the SEC their home, including last year's winner Tim Tebow. and no fewer than 10 of the teams in conference could end up in bowl games. truly it is the greatest college football league in all the land...or so we here in the south like to tell everyone.
