my favorite album of 2011

the city of Atlanta has been killing it for a few years now with some of the best rock n roll around...but Turf War might just be the best goddamn band yet. always a great live band for a couple of years now they'd now releases an album that does it's best to capture what makes these Southern boys so fucking good.

their debut, Years Of Living Dangerously, is the kinda record that hits you in your gut. it's gotta that energy that only a lovable loser whose been beat down by years of bad choices and worse luck can produce. it's the story of 1000 late night benders and 1000 blurry eyed hangovers all crashing together in an ode to having a good time and having no regrets...even if we all die too young. it's what a good rock record should sound like: a little bit sad, a little bit angry, and with enough hooks & catchy choruses to make Tom Petty proud.

don't let that final score fool you, it was soooooo much worse than 91-78. Just like every game in this ugly 7 game series the winner left the other team in the dust...luckily it was Atlanta's turn to be the destroyer. If Josh Smith wanted to try some ridiculous dunk then this was the game to do it. I was worried for about 5 minutes in the 3rd quarter, but by the time Atlanta was up by 15 I knew this one was over. I'd have loved to watch my boy Zaza get gangsta on Haslem's ass for that cheap foul/horse collar tackle at the end but we need his big goofy ass vs the Lebrons.


This victory is most definitely sweet. It's been so many years since any Atlanta team won anything of note that I forgot what it was like to celebrate. Sure, the entire city of Atlanta are just jumping on the bandwagon...but when your franchise has been as miserable as the Hawks have been for as long as they have been, well I'm willing to forgive the frontrunning. Are they gonna be able to do anything in round 2 vs. The Chose One and his band of bit players? Doubtful. But I think most of us who grew up loving the NBA and then lost faith in the league would be fine with our favorite team going down if it gives us a chance to see the two best players in the game face off in the finals. This season for the Hawks was more about establishing respectability to the city of Atlanta, and this first round victory has done that. The Hawks are an NBA team that the ATL can be proud to root for, and when you are building something from the ashes of despair that means a lot. Basketball matters again in Hotlanta and it totally rules.

Go Hawks. Make Lebron earn it.

On a totally random note, I issue a challenge to the young rappers of the Atlanta area to write a song and create a new dance craze called "Mine That Bird" after yesterday's Derby longshot champ. It could become the official theme song of the Hawks and Falcons and it could give Auburn players a dance to do if Spread Eagle 2 is a smashing success. Ok, get to it. Make my retarded fantasies real.

So I sat down for Game 5 expecting to get another dose of the Dwayne Wade Phantom Foul show and instead ended up getting a surprising Hawks victory. Apparently 83% of teams who win game 5 in a 2-2 series tie go on to win said series...I'm assuming that David Stern will figure out a way to make sure Atlanta falls into the 17% group. (Math correction...thanks JD. In the spirit of Marvel comics, you win a No-Prize.)

Also it should be noted that Dwayne Wade used to be my favorite player but with all his flopping and acting like a big fucking baby in this series we are now officially on a break. I mean Wade flops so much you'd think he played his college ball at Duke.

Go Hawks. Let's wrap this shit up so we can go get swept by the Cavs. Oh yeah, and no more fucking missed dunks.

Braves & Hawks doing asskickings the right way

the Atlanta Braves & Hawks capped off my weekend for me yesterday with thorough beatdowns of the Miami Heat and Pittsburgh Pirates respectively...and for that i give them both shout outs.


The Braves desperately needed a win to end their 5 game slide and i was happy to see the bats come alive for an 11-1 victory. avoiding a sweep by the Pirates might just be the thing to get this team back on a roll, also Esobar should be returning from his injury today. now the Braves are off the start a series against the worst team in baseball, the Washington Nationals, and hopefully make up some ground in the NL East.


even more impressive were the Hawks who just straight out murdered the Miami Heat in the opening game of their 1st round playoff match up. this one was over by the 1st half as Atlanta jumped out to a 20 point lead and then just ran away with it for a final of 90-64. all the starters had good games and Josh Smith just dominated with dunk after dunk. the defense was awesome and they held Dwayne Wade to only 19. if Atlanta plays like this you gotta like their chances of making this a quick series.
